Jennifer Fillo, PhD, MPH Cody Campen
SoAP Box Editor Student Editor
Welcome to the Summer 2024 SoAP Box Newsletter!
As always, we start off with Dr. Seema Clifasefi’s President’s Column. In this issue, she reflects on her time as President and looks ahead to the Division 50 sessions at this year’s APA convention. Make sure to check out her column and all the events coming this week.
We have several exciting spotlights in this issue. Dr. Michelle Zaso is featured in the Early Career Psychologist (ECP) Spotlight. In the Student Spotlight, I am thrilled to introduce Cody Campen—our new SoAP Box Student Editor! Cody is an amazing student and burgeoning researcher, and I am confident he will do a great job in this—his first—professional service role.
We also feature Dr. Christina Tam, a Research Scientist at the Alcohol Research Group studying racial and ethnic disparities in substance use. You can read more about her ongoing work, as well as her recent publication on racial and ethnic differences in drinking patterns in the US across the lifespan, in the Diversity Science Spotlight.
Rounding out this issue, we have a great submission for the Clinician’s Corner from Dr. Nicole Karst, entitled “Burning out the Gaslight: Addiction Psychologists and Rehab Culture.” Check out the newest products/resources from the Initiative for Justice and Emerging Adult Populations (JEAP) in Show and Tell. And hear about what Division 50 members have been doing this summer in the SoAP Box Sound Bites.
We have another great installment in the ECP Research & Clinical Seminar Series coming up on August 12th. Check out all of the details in Division Announcements.
Finally, while the focus is on the APA convention this week, it’s never too early to think ahead to next year. The CPA 2025 Call for Abstracts is already open! Check out the details on regular and late-breaking submissions in the CPA Announcements.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this issue! Looking ahead to the Fall 2024 issue and beyond, I welcome anyone from our membership to contribute a piece or suggestions for content. This includes things that fit within our established structure, as well as new ideas for standalone or recurring columns. Please submit any content to me (jfillo@mailbox.sc.edu) by Friday, November 1st, 2024.
- Diversity Science Spotlight. In this column, we are looking to highlight recently published work or accomplishments by members from backgrounds that are underrepresented in psychological science. We are also interested in promoting research focusing on improving health equity and social justice in historically disadvantaged groups. Send us a link and description of your current projects, awards, or media attention you have received, and any other information that you would like to share with our readers. If you are discussing research focused on improving health equity and social justice, you can also provide additional information about the implications of your research. Please limit responses to 500 words.
- SoAP Box Sound Bites. Fall is a busy time for applying to grad schools, internships, postdocs, and jobs. In 50 words or less, please respond to the following prompt—What’s the best advice you’ve ever received about preparing applications?
- Show and Tell. This is the place to show off your recent accomplishments, accolades, awards and/or to highlight the cool ways in which you promote your lab (websites, Facebook pages, Instagram accounts, etc.). Send us a link and description of your current projects, awards, or media attention you may have received, and any other information that you would like to share with our readers. Please limit responses to 200 words.
- Finding Success in Failure. In line with the recent trend of prominent academics and clinicians sharing their “CVs of Failures”, we want to hear about a time in your career when things didn’t go your way. For this next issue, I am hoping someone will provide insights into the challenges they experienced as a mentor and what they learned along the way. We are interested in what the challenge was, how you approached resolving the issue, and what you learned as a result of the experience. What advice would you give to others when facing similar challenges in the future? Please limit responses to 500 words.
- Clinical Pearls. Clinical Pearls pieces discuss a clinical problem or issue. These pieces summarize key points of the issue and provide relevant case illustrations. If you are interested in submitting a Clinical Pearls piece, please reach out to Nicole Karst (nicolekarst8404@gmail.com) and/or Jennifer Fillo (jfillo@mailbox.sc.edu) for detailed instructions.
- Clinician’s Corner. Clinician’s Corner can include creative ideas, important lessons learned, and innovations in practice and implementation. The Clinician's Corner is also a place for clinicians to introduce themselves and talk about their work and accomplishments. Clinical practice members of the Division can inspire and learn from one another. They also can provide fresh ideas and a unique perspective to academicians that could open the door and inspire new research. The Outreach & Dissemination Committee thought this was a way that the clinical voice based on theory, practice, experience, and imagination could be given a new forum within the division. Please limit responses to 1,000 words. If you are interested in submitting a Clinician’s Corner piece, please reach out to Nicole Karst (nicolekarst8404@gmail.com) and/or Jennifer Fillo (jfillo@mailbox.sc.edu) for detailed instructions.
- Clinical Translation. Do you have any recently published work that you wish you would have had more room in the manuscript to discuss clinical implications and applications? We would love for you all to share recently published work in this area and give us more information about how your research findings could be useful for clinicians. Please limit responses to 1,000 words. If you are interested in submitting a Clinical Translation piece, please reach out to Nicole Karst (nicolekarst8404@gmail.com) and/or Jennifer Fillo (jfillo@mailbox.sc.edu) for detailed instructions.
- Ethical Issues. In this column, we are looking for articles focused on describing ethical issues you may come across in your research and/or addiction-related clinical practice. Specifically, we want to hear what the ethical issue was, how you handled it, and the lessons learned. Some examples could be issues related to googling patients, how you handled it when a patient contacted you on social media, or what happens when you run into a research participant out in the real world. Please limit responses to 500 words.
Resources are available for those struggling with addiction and numerous effective treatments exist. Whether you are looking for help for yourself or a loved one, we encourage you to seek out help.
