APA Meeting Announcements

Spring 2022

Dear SoAP Members,

We hope you’re having a good start to 2022! It’s been a busy start for the Program Committee, and we are happy to give you an update on the SoAP Programming for the 2022 APA Convention that will take place August 4-6 in Minneapolis, MN.

First off, we would like to thank SoAP members for submitting and reviewing our program submissions. We would not be able to choose high quality programming without the hard work of our member reviewers. The resulting stellar programming includes divisional and co-sponsored symposia, posters, critical conversations, and skill-building sessions elevating SoAP’s 2022 theme, “Implementing a Public Health Approach to Addictions,” which was chosen by SoAP’s 2022 President, Dr. Mark Sobell. Here is an initial rundown of our programming.

We were thrilled to work with our colleagues at Divisions 9, 12, 28, 38, and to put together cross-cutting symposia:

  • Innovative approaches to using cognitive behavioral therapy for individuals with opioid use disorder

  • The opioid epidemic: Where we were, where we are, and the role of psychology

  • Digital healthcare: Effective eHealth applications for aggressive behavior and substance use

  • Ketamine and ketamine-assisted psychotherapy: An overview of the science and issues facing the field

  • The promises and perils of CBD psychopharmacotherapy

  • Stigma and spirituality: Addressing suicide and addiction in Muslim populations

  • Public support for overdose prevention programs: How to overcome misconceptions

  • Integrated OUD/SUD training program in South Florida: A capacity building project

There will also be exceptional skill-building sessions and critical conversations:

  • Behavioral economic methods to inform cannabis public policy (skill-building)

  • Substance use prevention messaging for youth during COVID-19 (skill-building)

  • Reducing the stigma of opioid use disorder programs for minority clients with low socioeconomic status (critical conversation)

  • Exploring social factors contributing to natural recovery from substance addiction (critical conversation)

  • The missing link to preventing opioid overdose is public approval of safe consumption sites (critical conversation)

Early Career Investigators Poster Session and Social Hour
SoAP is proud to sponsor two poster sessions at the Convention, including the Early Career Investigators Poster Session and Social Hour featuring up-to-date research on a broad range of addictive behaviors. This event is cosponsored by SoAP, Division 28 (Psychopharmacology and Substance Abuse) and NIH, and is an excellent way to reconnect with old colleagues, meet new colleagues, and engage in stimulating conversations about addiction psychology. As if all that isn’t enough, there will also be delicious catered food on offer. Join us on Friday, August 5th, 4-6pm!

SoAP Business Meeting
Aside from our exciting collaborative symposia, poster presentations, skill-building sessions, and critical conversations we would also like to invite you to the the SoAP Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony. At the business meeting, we will discuss the past year’s activities of the Executive Board and all SoAP committees, as well as distribute awards to SoAP members who have made outstanding contributions to the field. Please come to hear what we have been up to and to celebrate your colleagues.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2022 APA Convention in Minneapolis!
(P.S. We also hope to see many of you at our Collaborative Perspectives on Addiction meeting in Portland in April! Check out https://addictionpsychology.org/conventions/cpa/2022-collaborative-perspectives-addiction-meeting for more details.)
