SoAP Box:
Editor's Corner

Fall 2024

Jennifer Fillo, PhD, MPH

Welcome to the Fall 2024 SoAP Box Newsletter!

We start off this issue with Dr. Susan Collins’s message in her first President’s column. Dr. Collins introduces herself to our membership, highlights the upcoming CPA and APA themes, and shares numerous opportunities for engaging with SoAP. The contents of this issue echo her call to action, highlighting the activities of individuals and committees serving the Society.

In particular, we’re thrilled to showcase our newest Junior Student Representative, Corey Monley, in the Student Spotlight. You may remember Corey from the SoAP Box Summer Edition Sound Bites. Now, he’s serving the Society in this exciting new role.

The remaining recurring columns in this edition feature contributions from our wonderful committees! In the Diversity Science Spotlight, the 2024 CPA Diversity Committee shares key takeaways from a panel discussion that was held on best practices for effectively mentoring scholars from diverse backgrounds. To promote greater member involvement in these columns, the Outreach & Dissemination Committee shares new and improved guidelines for the Clinician’s Corner, Clinical Pearls, and Clinical Translation column submissions. Finally, the Education & Training Committee emphasizes the value of providing continuing education and highlights various opportunities available through the Society.

Rounding out this issue, you can check out a recent book on Treating Traumatic Stress and Substance Misuse from SoAP members Drs. Denise Hien and Lisa Caren Litt, in Show and Tell. Revisit the excitement of APA 2024 in the SoAP Box Sound Bites.

Also, make sure to check out the CPA Announcements and APA Announcements for conference details and calls for abstracts. While the CPA priority deadline has just passed, make sure to keep an eye out for the opportunity to submit late breaking abstracts in January. The APA submission portal is open now through January 8th, 2025.

Finally, this issue begins the final year of my three-year term as SoAP Box editor. The process of finding the next editor has begun. This position is a great opportunity to give back and engage with the entire Division 50 community! Check out further details in the call for the next editor. Applications are requested by January 6th, 2025.

Looking ahead to the Spring 2025 issue and beyond, I welcome anyone from our membership to contribute a piece or suggestions for content. This includes things that fit within our established structure, as well as new ideas for standalone or recurring columns. Please submit any content to me (jfillo@mailbox.sc.edu) by March 1st, 2025.

  • Diversity Science Spotlight. In this column, we are looking to highlight recently published work or accomplishments by members from backgrounds that are underrepresented in psychological science. We are also interested in promoting research focusing on improving health equity and social justice in historically disadvantaged groups. Send us a link and description of your current projects, awards, or media attention you have received, and any other information that you would like to share with our readers. If you are discussing research focused on improving health equity and social justice, you can also provide additional information about the implications of your research. Please limit responses to 500 words.
  • SoAP Box Sound Bites. Springtime is CPA time! In 50 words or less, please respond to the following prompt—"What advice would you give to first-time CPA attendees to make the most of the experience?"
  • Show and Tell. This is the place to show off your recent accomplishments, accolades, awards and/or to highlight the cool ways in which you promote your lab (websites, Facebook pages, Instagram accounts, etc.). Send us a link and description of your current projects, awards, or media attention you may have received, and any other information that you would like to share with our readers. Please limit responses to 200 words.
  • Finding Success in Failure. In line with the recent trend of prominent academics and clinicians sharing their “CVs of Failures”, we want to hear about a time in your career that things didn’t go your way. For this next issue, I am hoping someone will provide insights into the challenges they experienced as a mentor and what they learned along the way. We are interested in what the challenge was, how you approached resolving the issue, and what you learned as a result of the experience. What advice would you give to others when facing similar challenges in the future?  Please limit responses to 500 words.
  • Clinical Pearls, Clinician’s Corner, & Clinical Translation. See the submission guidelines outlined in this issue.
  • Ethical Issues. In this column, we are looking for articles focused on describing ethical issues you may come across in your research and/or addiction-related clinical practice. Specifically, we want to hear what the ethical issue was, how you handled it, and lessons learned. Some examples could be issues related to googling patients, how you handled it when a patient contacted you on social media, or what happens when you run into a research participant out in the real world. Please limit responses to 500 words.
