2022 APA Convention Call for Proposals

Implementing a Public Health Approach to Addictions

Hello and happy fall! We want to take this opportunity to introduce the 2022 SoAP APA program committee: Dr. Linda Rinehart, Dr. Angela Heads, Melissa Schick, Catherine Weerts, and Kimberley Shore. We are honored to be working with Division 50 President, Dr. Mark Sobell, and with the guidance of last year’s Chair, Dr. Megan Kirouac, to put together a thought-provoking, scientifically-informed, and clinically relevant program for the 2022 APA Convention that will be a hybrid of both virtual and live sessions in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The ongoing COVID19 pandemic highlights the ongoing public health crisis of addiction, and to this end, the 2022 SoAP program committee is seeking proposals on research and clinical advances addressing the Division 50 President’s theme of “Implementing a Public Health Approach to Addictions.” We hope you will consider submitting your proposals and join us for a thoughtful and open discourse to allow us to come together and share our work and ideas to ultimately help those who experience substance-related harm, their loved ones, and their communities.

In keeping with this theme, we particularly encourage the submission of programming for the 2022 APA Convention that:

  • Describes novel public health prevention and interventions strategies for addiction;
  • Identifies systems that enhance the accessibility, appeal, and diversity of addiction services;
  • Addresses socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic disparities in the experience of substance-related harm, health care, and access to care;
  • Examines mechanisms of substance behavior change;
  • Introduces community- and individual-level strengths that can support harm reduction; and
  • Emphasizes natural recovery and self-change.
