JSAT Call for Papers for Special Issue: Addiction Treatment Implementation Research

Dear Colleagues,

Please consider submitting an abstract for a Special Issue of the Journal of Substance Use & Addiction Treatment(JSAT) on the application of implementation science to the field of addiction treatment.

Although access to evidence-based addiction treatment services has been a longstanding problem, the current US opioid epidemic has drawn this issue into dire national focus. Despite significant federal investment to curtail overdose mortality, rates continue to rise. Access to proven pharmacological and psychosocial treatments is challenging for many. Implementation science holds the methodological key to address gaps in equitable access to high quality interventions for opioid use disorders and other substance use disorders. A JSAT special issue highlighting new and innovative research in this field will be timely.

We invite high-quality manuscripts on addiction treatment implementation research, such as:

• Hybrid effectiveness-implementation approaches
• Comparative implementation strategy evaluations
• Adaptations of evidence-based interventions to measurably improve reach and adoption
• Using implementation research methods to increase equitable access to evidence-based interventions in specialty and general health care, and criminal justice and social service settings
• Systematic studies of partner engagement or contextual determinants in intervention or protocol design, intervention adaptation, implementation strategy selection, and/or dissemination of findings
• Projects integrating implementation science, health economics, and policy
• Studies addressing racial, ethnic, sexual, and/or gender minority populations, as well as rural communities
• Studies of sustainability or sustainment

We welcome rigorous quantitative research, rigorous theory-driven or -generating qualitative studies, study protocols, systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Authors should submit an abstract (maximum of one page) of the proposed paper to Dr. Mark McGovern (mpmcg@stanford.edu) by November 1, 2023. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed and decisions will be announced no later than December 15, 2023. Papers invited for submission will be due on April 15, 2024. All submitted manuscripts will go through a rigorous peer-reviewed process, thus acceptance of your abstract does not guarantee publication. Accepted manuscripts will be published in print issues on a rolling basis and collected in an online special issue in late 2024.
