The Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research (MGD CMCR) Postdoctoral Fellowships

The prestigious Michael G. DeGroote Graduate Postdoctoral Fellowship in cannabis research provides postdoctoral fellows with the opportunity to pursue leading-edge research in line with the MGD CMCR’s key research areas: Pain and Addiction & Mental Health.

This program is supported by the Michael G. DeGroote Initiative for Innovation in Healthcare – with funding from Mr. Michael G. DeGroote and the Boris Family Foundation.

These fellowships aim to encourage and support cannabis research training and provide salary support to individuals with an exceptional background and interest in research relating to the Centre’s mandate. Successful recipients of these awards will have the opportunity to work with faculty who are conducting innovative research and are considered among the best in their field.

Value and Number of Awards

  • Each fellowship has a value of $60,000.00 CAD per year.
  • Each fellowship is awarded for one year with the potential for a one year renewal, as determined by the MGD CMCR leadership team.
  • Any additional funding required to support the candidate, in keeping with their program requirements, must be provided via the supervisor’s own resources.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Awards will be available to individuals undertaking cannabis-related research and who have demonstrated excellence in academic achievement throughout their doctoral training.
  • Candidates must have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD, MD, or equivalent.
  • Award recipients must be eligible to work in Canada for the term of this award.
  • Proposed projects must clearly demonstrate concordance with the mission and vision of the MGD CMCR.
  • Recipients cannot concurrently hold other post-doctoral fellowship.
  • Candidates will be required to have at least one supervisor who is a faculty affiliate of the MGD CMCR.
  • Fellowships will be held within the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, which includes affiliations with affiliated hospitals (St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Hamilton Health Sciences). Fellows pursuing research on addiction will also have the opportunity to affiliate with the Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research.

Application Process and Deadline

  • Applications must be sent via email to cmcr@mcmaster.ca. All application components must be received prior to the application deadline.
  • Applications must include:
  • Covering letter
  • Research proposal (maximum one-page outline that articulates research interests and alignment with the vision/goals of the CMCR).
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter from proposed supervisor(s) confirming his/her willingness and ability to supervise the applicant for the duration of the award.

Application deadline: Monday, May 28th, 2018 at 5:00 PM EST.

Selection Process

The Selection Committee for the award will be comprised of the MGD CMCR leadership team and select CMCR Faculty.

  • Fellowships will be awarded based primarily on the following criteria (other criteria may be introduced at the discretion of the Selection Committee) :
  • Feasibility and relevance of the research proposal.
  • Alignment of the research with the vision/goals of the CMCR.
  • Academic background (e.g., training experiences, publications, awards).
  • Confirmation of support from proposed supervisor.
  • All applicants will be notified of the result of their submission.
