Date: Wednesday, June 30

Time: 12-1 PM ET

Presenter: John Kelly, Ph.D.

Description: During the past 50 years, a great deal has been learned about the biopsychosocial causes of substance use disorder and its effects on neural circuits, cognition, and behavior. New knowledge on genetics and neuroplasticity attests to several of the biomedical causes and effects of these disorders, yet stigma persists. This talk will describe the fundamental causes of stigma and discrimination in relation to substance use disorder, review some of the paradoxical findings from the latest stigma research, and suggest how stigma and discrimination might be more systematically addressed to enhance the clinical care and outcomes of individuals suffering from substance use disorder.
