SoAP Clinical Teleconference - Medical Marijuana 6/14/19

News Date: Wednesday, June 12, 2019 - 13:30

We’re happy to announce our (near) monthly Clinical Teleconference, sponsored by the Society of Addiction Psychology (APA Division 50). This month we are extremely pleased to be providing a program on Medical Cannabis: Current Landscape, Therapeutic Potential, and Risks, hosted by one of the pioneers in this field, Dr. Marcel Bonn-Miller, from the University of Pennsylvania.

Program description and bio:

Research supporting the medical use of cannabis lags behind current policy efforts. This talk will provide an overview of cannabis, including its constituents, available consumer products, and the nuanced regulatory climate within which cannabis currently resides. We will review the research literature on its therapeutic potential, underlying mechanisms of action, and common risks associated with its use.

Dr. Bonn-Miller earned a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Vermont, and trained at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has held positions at the Center of Excellence for Substance Abuse Treatment and Education, the National Center for PTSD, and at Zynerba Pharmaceuticals where he served as Director of Cannabinoid Research.

Dr. Bonn-Miller currently holds academic positions at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, and at Thomas Jefferson University, and is the Global Scientific Director of Canopy Growth Corporation. He has conducted seminal work on the interrelations between cannabis and a range of health conditions. Dr. Bonn-Miller serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, has published well over 125 peer-reviewed empirical publications on cannabis, and has received dozens of Federal and State grants to support his research.

This will be an important and timely talk, and we hope that you all can participate. As always, there is no fee or pre-registration necessary for this program. Feel free to disseminate to any interested parties – the more the merrier.

Slides will be distributed mid-week to those on the distribution list. If you’re not on the list, just ask.
