Post-Doctoral Fellowship Announcement

The Health Promotion Research Center (HPRC) of the NCI Designated Stephenson Cancer Center (SCC) at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) is seeking applications for one open postdoctoral research fellowship (2-3 year appointment) working primarily with Dr. Amy Cohn. Interest in a fellow who seeks to become an independent academic researcher in the areas of tobacco and/or cannabis regulatory science, flavored tobacco use, cannabis and tobacco use and co-use, and health disparities. Starting salary is $60,000, and includes a $10,000 fund for travel and training activities. Dr. Cohn is the Director of Training at the HPRC and Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics. The fellow will receive intensive and hands-on training in laboratory and smartphone-based assessment of tobacco use and related health-risk behaviors behavior (e.g., cannabis use) using ecological momentary assessment, sensor data (i.e., mobile carbon monoxide assessment), laboratory smoking topography techniques, and behavioral economic paradigms to identify multi-level factors related to appeal for tobacco products and other health-risk behaviors in real time (see recent studies at https://healthpromotionresearch.org/Faculty/Cohn-Lab). Dr. Cohn’s studies are currently operated in the HPRC state-of-the-art Tobacco Regulatory Science Clinical Laboratory that allows for the observation and measurement of tobacco use behavior via 4 negative pressure rooms and multiple remote and desktop topography devices. Her team is staffed by 3 research technicians, a postdoctoral fellow, a project coordinator, and a biostatistician. Dr. Cohn’s lab currently supports 3 ongoing FDA and NIDA-funded clinical trials addressing appeal for menthol cigarettes in young adults, as well as several internal pilot projects assessing trajectories of e-cigarette and tobacco use in pregnant women, cannabis use among cancer patients, and statewide trends in attitudes about and use of cannabis. Opportunities exist for secondary analyses of PATH restricted use data (including biomarker data), laboratory smoking topography data on menthol use, behavioral economic paradigms.

The fellow will be primarily involved in manuscript preparation (primary and secondary roles) and analyses using data from multiple completed and ongoing studies that address menthol cigarette smoking (i.e., PRISM, Project Enhance), cannabis and tobacco co-use in young adults (i.e., Project MATCH), appeal for flavored e-cigarettes and little cigars/cigarillos in young adults (i.e., ADAPT, ASPIRE), cannabis use in cancer patients, the impact of medical cannabis legalization in Oklahoma (IMMPACT), and trajectories of e-cigarette use during pregnancy. The fellow will also receive training in advanced statistical analyses, such as multi-level modeling and latent trajectory and latent transition analysis, training in grant writing and preparation, conducting clinical trials, ecological momentary assessment, and laboratory smoking topography (see more here: https://healthpromotionresearch.org/Training).

Qualifications: doctoral degree in the behavioral or social sciences, public health, psychology, clinical psychology, or other relevant area. Fellow duties are highly focused on writing (e.g., papers, grant applications), thus excellent writing skills are required. Experience with diverse populations, tobacco research, and advanced analyses are preferred but not required.
