Position Summary
In the spring of 2019, UNM President Garnett S. Stokes, PhD announced the UNM Substance Use Disorders Grand Challenge, which is an initiative focused on bringing together researchers from across disciplines to address this problem of national and regional significance. The UNM Substance Use Disorders Grand Challenge is co-led by the UNM Health Sciences and UNM Main Campus.

Pursuant to this goal, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the UNM School of Medicine HSC is seeking a clinical faculty researcher, suitable for appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate or full Professor, with a research program focused upon substance use, to join our Addictions Division. Primary faculty appointment will be in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Salary and academic rank will be commensurate with experience and academic background.

Candidates for this position are those who currently engage in research with the goals of the UNM Substance Use Disorder Grand Challenge and include (1) understanding the causes and consequences of substance use, and the myriad health, behavioral, and social problems with which it intersects; (2) emphasis on the development, refinement, and evaluation of interventions to reduce or prevent substance use; and (3) informing public policy, risk reduction strategies, and service provision by public and non-profit entities. The successful candidate will be expected to (1) engage in transdisciplinary research with faculty and trainees across the UNM campus and bring together multiple areas and perspectives, and thus bridge traditional scientific and structural barriers, and (2) study substance use as it intersects with other health, behavioral, and social problems. We are particularly interested in candidates who study these questions in diverse contexts or in diverse or vulnerable populations. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain productive, federally funded research programs in relevant areas, and will be expected to demonstrate medical student, psychology intern, postdoctoral, resident and fellow instructional effectiveness within a diverse student body.

The University of New Mexico is well-situated to foster transdisciplinary research pursuant to the goals of the UNM Substance Use Disorders Grand Challenge with substance use research occurring across many Departments and Centers. These departments and centers include the UNM Health Sciences Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Neurosciences, Family and Community Medicine, and Internal Medicine, the Colleges of Population Health, Pharmacy, and Nursing, the UNM Departments of Psychology, Economics, and Political Science, and the UNM Health Sciences Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC), the UNM Health Sciences Transdisciplinary Research, Equity and Engagement Center for Advancing Behavioral Health (TREE Center), the UNM Health Sciences Alcohol Research Center, and the UNM Center on Alcohol, Substance Use and Addictions (CASAA). These Departments and Centers offer resources for the study of prevention, behavioral and pharmacologic treatments, clinical trials including pharmacological clinical trials, neuroimaging, neuromodulation, mechanisms of change, and rural and underserved populations. In addition, the UNM Health Sciences is also soon to be home to the Interdisciplinary Substance Use and Brain Injury facility, a biomedical research facility devoted to translational substance use and brain injury research. This facility will be located next to current preclinical and clinical neuroimaging resources and will house specialized research space that will allow for analyses of big data, investigations across the lifespan, in clinical and community populations, as well as in preclinical studies.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• Doctorate degree, MD or PhD or equivalent;
• Board certified or eligible in Psychiatry (if MD or equivalent) or Clinically trained and licensed psychologist (if PhD or equivalent);
• Minimum 2 years postdoctoral research experience;
• Strong record of research achievement, including extramural federal research funding, commensurate with experience;
• Licensable in the state of New Mexico;
• Must be eligible to work in the United States.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 
• If MD, board certified or eligible in Addiction Psychiatry or Addiction Medicine;
• Evidence of an established research program focused on substance use, preferably in opioid use;
• Evidence of a transdisciplinary research focus and track record of studying substance use as it intersects with other public health problems;
• Teaching experience with psychology interns, graduate students, fellows, residents and/or medical students.
