Contrary to popular belief, psychoanalytic theories can be exceptionally helpful and relevant to the treatment of substance misuse, especially with a harm reduction approach. An integrated approach that utilizes these concepts along with more traditional harm reduction techniques will be presented with time for clinical discussion and questions from audience members.
Debra Rothschild is a New York State licensed psychologist, certified psychoanalyst and substance use therapist in private practice in New York City. She is on the faculty and a graduate of the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and a supervisor at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies (NIP) in New York. In addition, she supervises PhD candidates at City College and Long Island University Clinical Psychology Programs and is an executive board member and twice past president of the New York State Psychological Association Division on Addictions. She publishes and lectures widely on the integration of psychoanalytic thought with harm reduction psychotherapy and substance use treatment.
