MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE USE RESEARCH AND INTERVENTIONS FOR LGBTQ+ PEOPLE IN A POST-COVID WORLD
In this talk, Jillian R. Scheer, Ph.D., discusses (1) why LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. may be disproportionately impacted by worse COVID-19 outcomes and mental health comorbidities, including PTSD and substance use and (2) implications for addressing stigma- and trauma-related stressors in mental and behavioral health interventions for this population, especially during times of heightened societal stress, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jillian R. Scheer, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and researcher. She is the Cobb-Jones Professor of Clinical Psychology and Assistant Professor of Psychology, Syracuse University.
Their program of research seeks to understand and address co-occurring epidemics, such as stigma-related stress (e.g., heterosexism, racism, sexism, cissexism), trauma exposure, hazardous drinking, and PTSD, surrounding sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations, with a focus on sexual minority women and gender-diverse people.
Dr. Scheer earned her PhD in Counseling Psychology from Boston College and a Post Doctoral Fellowship from Yale School of Public Health. Publications include:
