2020 APA Convention Submission Portal is open with Division 50 submission deadline of 12/2

News Date: Thursday, October 17, 2019 - 08:45

See message below from Dr. Susan Collins, Division 50 Membership Chair, about the 2020 APA Convention:

The submission portal (https://convention.apa.org/proposals/division-programs) is now open and accepting Division 50 programming for the upcoming 2020 APA Convention in Washington, DC! The deadline for submissions is December 2, 2019.

Our goal is to put together a strong program that highlights Dr. Sobell’s selected theme, “50 Years of Harm Reduction: Past, Present and Future.” Some examples could include programming that operationalizes, documents and/or evaluates substance-related harm; socioeconomic, racial and ethnic disparities in the experience of substance-related harm; community- and individual-level strengths that can minimize harm; natural recovery and self-change; and harm-reduction treatments, programming and interventions.

We are also excited to receive submissions from folks who are doing cutting edge work on various topics across the field, including those emphasizing priorities of 2020’s President and Past President (emphasizing contributions of students and early career folks, diversity and inclusion, collaboration across divisions, and “Deep Poverty”).

Programming types include:

·        Skill-building sessions (teaching sessions imparting skills or ways to move theory into practice)

·        Data blitz (a session of fast-paced (5 min) presentations on research)

·        Symposia/discussions (a series of presentations on a specific topic)

·        Posters

Another exciting opportunity for graduate students and recent graduates is Psych Science in 3 (https://convention.apa.org/proposals/psych-science-in-3). This presentation format is designed for graduate students or recently matriculated psychologists (i.e., obtained PhD 2018 or later) to present their research in three minutes in competition for prizes. The deadline for this opportunity is also Dec 2.

Finally, you can submit a CE workshop (https://convention.apa.org/proposals/ce-workshops). The deadline on these workshops is 11/12.

As your Div 50 Membership Chair, I also want to encourage new members to attend and participate in convention programming. To this end, I have also started a Division 50 convention session planning sheet as a google doc: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aHKGfbC5xrcT_rpyu7uMtgvIVE6VnJhQNi6YkMYB_JQ/edit#gid=0. This sheet should act as a way to facilitate communication for those of you with symposium ideas or interests, but unsure who or where to turn to next. You can find out there who to contact about mutual interests in setting up symposia. Should anyone be interested in learning more about the submission process, feel free to contact me (susan.collins@wsu.edu). I will also reach out to individuals that express interest on overlapping topics in the hope of acting as a guide in the APA submission process and in linking up similar-minded folks.
